Soonerthon raises $23K during homecoming week
Soonerthon, The University of Oklahoma’s Dance Marathon partnered with Campus Activities Council’s Homecoming to raise $23,468 for Children’s Hospital Foundation. This partnering effort culminated in the check presentation to Soonerthon Overall Chair, Jordan Smicklas and Vice Chair, Nik Scott at the Rah! Rally on Friday, October 28. These funds will be added to their overall total which will be announced on March 4th, 2017.
The Campus Activities Council held two philanthropy events the week of homecoming, a benefit night and “Fill the Oval”. The benefit night was similar to a takeover of Campus Corner businesses, with each participating businesses donating a portion of proceeds to Soonerthon. Homecoming also held their second annual “Fill the Oval” event on the South Oval on the OU campus on October 26. For this event, every homecoming group was assigned a balloon color and for every $10 contribution, a balloon was blown up and tied to curling ribbon attached to stakes in the ground. Miracle Child Samantha was in attendance helping with the balloon ties and sharing her story with students and homecoming royalty as they made donations.
Soonerthon was founded in 1996 and is a part of the Miracle Network Dance Marathon program benefiting Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Since it’s founding, Soonerthon has raised over $2.5 million for Children’s Hospital Foundation. The students host a 12-hour Dance Marathon event each March to culminate their year-long efforts raising funds and awareness. This year, their Dance Marathon will be March 4 at The University of Oklahoma. You can support Soonerthon and Children’s Hospital Foundation by making a donation here.
